MiLB: 2019 Last Chance for Montgomery Biscuits to Make History ... for Now

The Montgomery Biscuits kick off their 2019 season on Thursday Night (April 4th) at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, Tennessee against the Chattanooga Lookouts. The Biscuits pushed it to the limit last season making it a 3-2 record in the 2018 Southern League North Division Championship Series against the eventual Southern League Championship winning Jackson Generals. This season, the Biscuits have one last chance at making history by winning the Southern League Championship representing both the North and South Division (in separate playoffs).

Since the North/South era began in 2005, no team has ever represented both North and South Divisions in separate playoffs. Montgomery joins the Birmingham Barons as teams who have 50% of the equation complete. The Birmingham Barons have earned playoff berths by winning regular season halves in 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2011 but the team has never sealed the deal of a Southern League South Division Championship.

In 2006, Montgomery kicked off their road to this point by defeating, at the time, the Jacksonville Suns for the Southern League South Division Championship. During the 2006 SLCS, Montgomery defeated the Huntsville Stars tallying their first of two championships.

In 2015, The Biloxi Shuckers move from Huntsville, Alabama, pushing the Montgomery Biscuits to the North Division as Biloxi moved to the South Division. Since the move, Montgomery has made the playoffs by winning regular season halves three out of the four seasons but have failed to make it back to the SLCS.

With the Rocket City Trash Pandas coming in 2020, Montgomery will move back to the South Division making 2019 the last chance for Montgomery to make history unless they get moved back to the North Division. With the Mobile BayBears moving to Madison, Alabama and the North Division, they could technically be the next team to complete this task. Mobile won the Southern League Championship in 2011 and 2012 as a South Division team while they will begin the task of winning the North Division Championship in 2020. (Koelle, 2019)
