MiLB: The Walk-Off Sports Report Southern League Playoff Watch (August 31st, 2018)

Friday's action in the southern league was highlighted by teams snapping winless streaks, teams extending their lead, and a little modification to the South Division. With many teams just facing three days left of action, the intensity will hit an all-time high if it hasn't already. These final games are must wins in order to gain everything possible before the clock strikes zero on the 2018 regular season.  North Division Playoff Picture The Chattanooga Lookouts defeated the Jackson Generals 4-1 in Jackson marking the first victory for the Lookouts since Monday night against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Also picking up their first victory since Monday was the Tennessee Smokies. The Smokies defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 3-2 in Friday's contest. Montgomery defeated the Mobile BayBears after packing on runs late with a 5-3 result. Birmingham was shutout by the Biloxi Shuckers being the only team from the North Division to drop a game.  North Division Standings

MiLB: If Montgomery Wins North Division Series they Will Become First to Represent Both North and South in SL Championship Game

The Montgomery Biscuits are looking to do something that no other teams in the Southern League have done in the time since the realignment in 2005. Starting on Wednesday, the Biscuits will battle the Jackson Generals for the North Division Championship but in order to see what historical thing they are looking to do, you have to rewind to the realignment in 2005. The Birmingham Barons won a half of the season in 2005 as a South Division team, they are now a North Division team and have won the North Division title but a South Division title was one that eluded them. They won South Division Half Championships in 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2011 but have never made it to the Southern League Championship game to represent the South. The following season, 2006, The Montgomery Biscuits earned the South Division Half Championship and defeated, at the time, Jacksonville Suns for a berth in the Southern League Championship Series. Montgomery would go on to defeat the Huntsville Stars earning the

MiLB: Chattanooga Lookouts Looking to Avoid First Last Place Finish Since 2013

The 2018 season has been truly a roller coaster ride for the Chattanooga Lookouts. A year after winning their third Southern League Championship, the Lookouts will not defend their 2017 title. In fact, the Lookouts are just battling to keep from finishing last in the North Division for the first time since the 2013 season. You cannot say the talent is not there with the Lookouts as on Wednesday, the Southern League announced that three 2018 Lookouts had been named to the SL All-Star team along with the Biloxi Shuckers and Jackson Generals. Those three teams led the way in the All-Star team with three players apiece, but one thing is different. That different thing is that both the Biloxi Shuckers and Jackson Generals will both be playing past next Monday while the Lookouts season comes to a close on Monday in Jackson. Brent Rooker, Zander Wiel, and Tanner English have very well led to impressive seasons in their statistics department but something is missing from past years and one

College Football: Chattanooga Mocs Defeat Tennessee Tech in Season Opener

The Chattanooga Mocs kicked off the season with a victory on Thursday night (August 30th). The Mocs defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 34-10 using a sharp defense and a strong defense, that set the pace of the game early. Kareem Orr put up the first defensive play of the game. Orr picked off a throw by Bailey Fisher but the TTU defense returned with a keen attack. Victor Ulmo kicked the first points of the night with a 37-yard field goal and then added on another field goal to put the Mocs up 6-0.  The defense of Tech then replied to that play with an interception that landed in the hands of Josh Poplar. 14 yards later, Tech scored making it a 7-6 ballgame. Mid-way through the second quarter, Bryce Nunnelly took a screen pass all the way down the right sideline 89 yards to give the lead back to the Mocs, 13-7. Jerrell Lawson picked off Fisher's pass and brought it back 26-yards to make it 20-7. A 40-yard run and a 63-yard run put the Mocs up 34 points while TTU was h

The Montgomery Biscuits clinched the second-half championship with their victory on Thursday night while the Pensacola Blue Wahoos are inching further away from the Mobile BayBears for the Wild Card in the South Division. North Division Playoff Picture The Montgomery Biscuits clinched the North Division Second-Half Championship on Thursday. College Football: The Jeremy Pruitt Era Begins on Saturday Against West Virginia

The Tennessee Volunteers kick off their 2018 season against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday at Bank of America stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Volunteers are coming off of the worst season in program history and now that the Butch Jones era has come to an end, Saturday's game is beginning of both the rebuilding and Jeremy Pruitt era. The West Virginia Mountaineers have been a member of the strong Big 12 conference that has included some of the bigger teams in college football including the Oklahoma Sooners, who defeated the Tennessee Vols in 2015. It will be the first time the two have met and it will be one that could go down as one of the best season-opening games for both teams but one of the things that could benefit Tennessee is being the location of the season-opening game. Tennessee is 5-0-1 in season-opening games at neutral sites. Georgia Tech attempted to take down Tennesee last season but failed in overtime in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlan

The Montgomery Biscuits punched their ticket to the playoffs with a victory against the Tennessee Smokies. The Birmingham Barons didn't go down without a fight though defeating Jackson in extra innings but it wasn't enough to keep them in contention. The Chattanooga Lookouts lost game five against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp but still picked up their second straight series victory. The Lookouts will be a huge part in deci

MiLB: The Montgomery Biscuits Clinch Fourth Straight Playoff Berth

The Southern League North Division Championship Series field has been set. The Montgomery Biscuits will face the Jackson Generals for the North Division Championship beginning on September 5th in Jackson, Tennessee. Montgomery clinched their spot in the playoffs Tuesday night with a victory against the Tennesse Smokies. Despite clinching their spot in the playoffs, the entirety of the SLNDS has not been decided yet. If the Jackson Generals win the second-half, meaning they sweep the season, they will host games four and five. If the Montgomery Biscuits win the second-half, four and five will be in Montgomery. Games one and two will be in Jackson being as the Generals won the first-half and Montgomery will for sure host game three. It is the fourth consecutive season that the Montgomery Biscuits have competed in the SL Playoffs. Last season, Montgomery dropped the SLNDCS to the Chattanooga Lookouts after five games (The NDCS became the co-championship series after Hurricane

MiLB: The Walk-Off Sports Report Southern League Playoff Watch (August 27th, 2018)

The end is near. We have one full week remaining in the Southern League Regular Season as many teams are approaching their final series of the regular season. Montgomery's clinching of the second half championship is just around the corner and the South Division is beginning to take it to the limit as both the Second-Half Regular Season Standings and Wild-Card Standings are getting hotter and hotter. The North Division Playoff Picture The North Division Second Half champions could be decided by the end of the week with Montgomery three victories away from clinching. Even if the Jackson Generals win the second half, Montgomery will make it in via the Wild Card. Chattanooga picked up their second straight victory against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp while Jackson and Birmingham gave the fans free baseball on Monday night with Jackson picking up the victory. Tennesee finally picked up the victory against the Montgomery Biscuits but it came too late as the Smokies are eliminat

MiLB: The Walk-Off Sports Report Southern League Playoff Watch (August 26th, 2018)

As we approach the upcoming week, many teams looked to gain some momentum while others are beginning to pray that the first half champion steals the second half to earn a berth in the playoffs via the Wild-Card. As we approach the final full week of the regular season, things will come to a boiling point. The North Division Playoff Picture Montgomery downed the Tennessee Smokies again on Sunday with a score of 3-1. A team that was in good position to be in contention for the second-half championship last week is now eliminated becoming the second team to be eliminated in the north division.  Birmingham secured the victory against the Jackson Generals in an important victory that could keep them in contention but they'll need some help.  Chattanooga took it to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Sunday afternoon after losing to the Jumbo Shrimp during the ninth inning of Saturday's game.  Montgomery's magic number to clinch the second half is now 3. MiLB: Ninth Inning Rally by Jumbo Shrimp Overshadows Strong Eighth Inning by Chattanooga

The entire seven-inning game was as equal as possible and then the bats lit up as fans were sitting down from the seventh inning stretch. Chattanooga entered the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead against the Jumbo Shrimp. Home field advantage normally benefits ... well, you know the home team but that wasn't the case on Saturday Night. The visiting Jumbo Shrimp loaded the bases and when Sharif Othman hit a single, two runs scored knocking the deficit down to one. A force out pushed another run across the plate tying the ballgame. Brian Miller punched a double scoring the winning run snapping the Chattanooga Lookouts two-game winning streak.

MiLB: The Walk-Off Sports Report Southern League Playoff Watch (August 25th, 2018)

The second to final Saturday Night of the 2018 regular season featured some high scoring games. The Chattanooga Lookouts and Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp kept it calm until the eighth inning while Mississippi came close to shutting out the Biloxi Shuckers. Two more teams are now closer to elimination the night after the Chattanooga Lookouts became the second team to be eliminated from winning the second half. As we approach the week, things could get a little heated and two teams may be eliminated before the final week of the regular season even begins. North Division Playoff Picture Tennessee dropped their second straight game to the Montgomery Biscuits landing them with their backs against the wall. The Smokies cannot afford to lose any more games the remainder of the year but more importantly, they have to keep Montgomery from winning anymore if they'd like to have a chance to make the playoffs IF Jackson sweeps the halves. Jackson pulled ahead of Birmingham earning the vi

Another night, another team eliminated from playoff contention. The Chattanooga Lookouts defeated the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp but it wasn't enough to keep the Lookouts in contention as the Montgomery Biscuits defeated the Tennessee Smokies eliminating the Lookouts. Biloxi's six-game winning streak came to an end but other than the Chattanooga Lookouts, the eight remaining teams are still eligible to win the second half. As games click away, more teams will be eliminated which will build more intensity. North Division Playoff Picture  As noted above, Chattanooga became the second team to be eliminated from playoff contention. Chattanooga defeated the Jumbo Shrimp on Friday Night but it wasn't enough as things out of their control knocked them out of contention.  Montgomery rebounded from a extra-innings loss on Thursday Night against the Lookouts by dominating the Tennessee Smokies 10-2. Birmingham also dropped their game against Jackson but stay in the playoff c

MiLB: Chattanooga Secures 4-3 Victory Against Jacksonville

Chattanooga scored three runs in the first inning but slowly, Jacksonville made a comeback. One run in the second inning and two runs in the third made it a tie game. Just after Thursday's game against Montgomery went to extra innings for Chatanooga and a doubleheader against Birmingham this game looked like it could've gone to extra innings. In the sixth inning, Luis Arraez drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to put Chattanooga on top by one. Chattanooga pushed Jacksonville to three scoreless innings with the team ultimately picking up the victory. A combined 12 strikeouts highlighted the night amongst Jorge Alcala, Sam Clay, and Devin Smeltzer. Clay would secure his 20th career victory in the Minors and second of 2018. Two doubleheaders highlighted Thursday's slate of games and the final game of all of the series' of the week. The week was a weird one highlighted by multiple changes in the playoffs picture. It also builds the intensity as all ten teams play someone new beginning on Friday. The intensity is about to boil over with just 10 games remaining. North Division Playoff Picture  Chattanooga returned the favor from Wednesday's comeback by the Biscuits by forming a comeback on their own on Thursday night. Montgomery had scored two runs through six innings and entered the ninth inning with a two-point lead. Two runs scored by Chattanooga gave us extra baseball. Andy Wilkins hit a two-run home run in the 10th to give Chattanooga the victory, keeping their tiny playoff chances alive. The Biscuits won Sunday's series starting game 6-2 but on Monday Night the Looks kicked off their small winning streak with two straight victories against Montgomery.  Thursday nights game looked to be going the right direction for Chattanooga but two mistakes in the eighth gave Montgomery the lead and ultimately the victory snapping the two-game winning streak. In five innings Snow had five hits on him with one walk and four strikeouts. Jesus Sanchez scored on a single by Miles Mastrobuoni in the second inning to put Montgomery on top 1-0 and Lucius Fox scored on a single by Brett Sullivan in the sixth inning to put Montgomery up 2-0. While in the North, Montgomery is one game away from making the Chattanooga Lookouts the first team to be eliminated from the playoff picture. Intensity is picking up and the level of importance of games is heightening. North Division Playoff Picture As noted above, Montgomery snapped Chattanooga's streak at two games defeating the Lookouts 3-2 setting up a series-deciding game on Thursday Night. MiLB: Chattanooga Drops Game Four to Montgomery after Biscuit Comeback in Eighth

Chattanooga had the upper hand on the Montgomery Biscuits through eight innings after scoring two runs in the first but a wild throw by pitcher Tyler Jay caused Nathan Lukes to score giving Montgomery the lead and ultimately the victory in game four of five in Montgomery. The last two games for the Lookouts have been the wake-up call for both teams involved in this series. Chattanooga kicked off Wednesday's battle the way they had the previous two nights, by putting points up on the board in the first inning. Jaylin Davis belted a two-run home run in the first, his fifth home run since joining Chattanooga, matching his total from earlier in the season with Fort Myers. Miles Mastrobuoni singled on a line drive in the fifth to put Montgomery on the board but from that point, Chattanooga kept the bleeding from getting out of control that was until the eighth inning. Tyler Jay had two issues in the eighth which resulted in Jake Cronenworth and Lukes scoring during the mistakes pu

Tuesday night wasn't a good night for the leaders of the North Division and saw the Biloxi Shuckers and Pensacola Blue Wahoos add an extra level of intensity for the final two games of their series. With that being said, no teams clinched their playoff spots and time is ticking for teams to make it happen. North Division Playoff Picture For the second straight night, the Chattanooga Lookouts made a statement that they won't be put down easily. The Lookouts defeated the division-leading Montgomery Biscuits easing the sting on the losses by Tennessee and Birmingham.  Jackson defeated Tennessee putting them back in the second-half championship discussion after the team already punched their playoff ticket in the first half. Jordan Gore hit an RBI-double in the top of the sixth to add the fifth run of the night.  Brett Sullivan hit a home run to kick off the eighth inning and it could've been the comeback by the Biscuits but the Lookouts kept them at bay and earned their 59th victory of 2018. Game four is slated to kick off at 6:35 p.m. CT in Montgomery. The Chattanooga Lookouts will look to earn their first series victory since month opening series against Mississippi (8/2-8/6). The Southern League Playoffs are looming closer and closer. The pressure is building and it can be seen through multiple teams in both divisions who aren't letting their chances die just yet. Two teams are being set back from knocking any ground off by mother nature but it's also keeping the South Division on their toes as time is ticking.  North Division Playoff Picture The Chattanooga Lookouts have had a rough August going 7-17 this month. Of the two divisions before Monday night, Chattanooga was the closest to being eliminated from a playoff berth and though they are still incredibly close to elimination, they aren't giving up. Chattanooga was able to outhit division leading Montgomery Biscuits 6-2.  With Montgomery's loss, Tennessee and Birmingham inched closer and closer to the lead. Both Smokies and Barons won on Monday night knocking the games behind off by one. Jackson Generals lost to Tennessee pushing them further and further down the rankings but for t

MiLB: Multi-Home Run Game Propels Lookouts to 6-2 Victory Against Montgomery

The elimination number for the Chattanooga Lookouts was three before Monday's game against Montgomery. A strong night for Chattanooga keeps the number from dropping to two as the Lookouts defeated the Biscuits 6-2. Unlike the previous games the last two weekends, Chattanooga fired first and kept the pressure on throughout the entire game. Luke Raley and Jimmy Kerrigan both belted homers in the victory while great offense on the rest of the team and great defense put the Lookouts on top for the first time since last Thursday against Mississippi. Tyler Wells (1-2) put in a stellar performance en-route to his first victory as a Chattanooga Lookout. In five innings pitched Wells had seven hits on him, two runs, and three strikeouts during the game. The Chattanooga Lookouts fell short in both games of Saturday's (August 18th) doubleheader in Pearl, Mississippi. It's the first shutout loss since June 30th against Tennessee for the Lookouts. It is the first loss for Sean Poppen since July 9th against Jacksonville. Poppen is now 5-6 as a pitcher for the Chattanooga Lookouts. Game two was a hit fest with a total of 24 hits combined among both teams.
