MiLB: The Walk-Off Sports Report Friday Southern League Playoff Watch - August 9th, 2019

The race to the Southern League Playoffs is picking up speed during the first complete week of the month of August. The Montgomery Biscuits continue to hold down the fort in the North Division while the Biloxi Shuckers continue to hold off the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in the South Division. All eight teams in the league, who didn't win the first half, are still in the picture but some teams hopes are inching closer and closer to being diminished. Chattanooga and Tennessee both are the closest with their elimination numbers at eight while Mobile's elimination number sits at 10.

Should Montgomery and Biloxi sweep the season, the wild card race will be interesting to watch pan out as we enter the home stretch towards the playoffs. Here is the first edition of the Friday Night Southern League Playoff Watch of the 2019 Southern League season.

North Division - Montgomery Continues Strong Hold

The Montgomery Biscuits claimed the victory over the Birmingham Barons Friday Night inching their lead over the Jackson Generals in the North Divison to 1.5 games. Jackson also earned the victory Friday Night against the Chattanooga Lookouts who are seeing their chances of winning the Second Half become slimmer and slimmer.

Tennessee failed to defeat the South division-leading Biloxi Shuckers Friday Night pushing them further away from a Second-Half North Division Championship. As noted above, Chattanooga and Tennessee are just eight games away from being eliminated from the Second Half North Division Championship. Unlike Tennessee, Chattanooga still has an opportunity to make the Southern League Championship Series via the wildcard championship (standings below).

North Division Second-Half Standings

  1. * Montgomery Biscuits
  2. Jackson Generals - 1.5 GB
  3. Birmingham Barons - 5.5 GB
  4. Chattanooga Lookouts - 14.5 GB
  5. Tennessee Smokies - 15.0 GB

North Division Wild Card Standings

  1. Jackson Generals - (67-48)
  2. Chattanooga Lookouts - (52-64)
  3. Birmingham Barons - (51-63)
  4. Tennessee Smokies - (49-68)

South Division - Biloxi Continues to Shuck the South Division

Since moving from Huntsville to Biloxi, the Shuckers have had a stronghold on the South Division. The Shuckers tallied their fourth win in a row Friday Night and move two games ahead of the second-place Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

Jacksonville is giving Biloxi a run for their money and it's something that no one probably saw coming after the Jumbo Shrimp's first-half wasn't anything special. That nothing special first half is haunting the Jumbo Shrimp as they are more than likely going to have to win the second half in order to make the playoffs as they currently sit third in the wild-card standings. They kept the ball rolling in the right direction beating the Mississippi Braves 2-1 Friday Night, the Shrimp's second straight victory.

North Divison Second Half Standings

  1. * Biloxi Shuckers
  2. Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp - 2.0 GB
  3. Pensacola Blue Wahoos - 5.0 GB
  4. Mississippi Braves - 6.0 GB
  5. Mobile BayBears - 13.0 GB

North Division Wild Card Standings

  1. Pensacola Blue Wahoos - (62-55)
  2. Mississippi Braves - (56-61)
  3. Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp - (56-61)
  4. Mobile BayBears - (43-72)

Supercross: Chad Reed Tallies First Podium Finish Since 2017

It wasn't a victory for Chad Reed in Detroit but it was a podium finish for the driver from Kurri Kurri, Australia. His first podium since Glendale in 2017 and the 132nd career podium finish. The finish is just another page in the story for Reed and 2019 has been one hell of a story so far. Reed has already earned more top 10 finishes this season then he did last season. The first top-five finish Reed earned this year already was more than he netted in 2018. Before San Diego, Reed had not finished inside the top five since Toronto in 2017. Will Christien denoted to Reed during the post-race interview that he had not been a fan of the new "Triple Crown" format but will take a third place finish. "Honestly just starts and finally riding to your ability," Reed told NBCSN. "It's been a long time. For the guy who has stood up here more than anyone in the sport, you know I take it on personally as just feeling less about myself for not getting up here and

MiLB: Mobile BayBears Look for Walk-Off in Final Season in Mobile

On Thursday (April 4th), the Mobile BayBears kick off their final season in Mobile, Alabama. The team will relocate to Madison, Alabama after this season and the BayBears are looking to finish in walk-off style. The BayBears have an opportunity in 2019 to tie the Montgomery Biscuits with four Southern League titles. The organization is currently fourth on the all-time SLCS victories. One last season at Hank Aaron Stadium, is this the year they walk-off with their fifth Southern League championship? In 2018, the Mobile BayBears were hiding in the bushes during the 2018 Walk-Off Sports Report Southern League Playoff Watch but the organization was eliminated from playoff contention rather early in the campaign. The organization finished 66-70, fourth in the South Division. The BayBears were second in runs scored per game and runs batted in during the 2018 season but the rest of the batting statistics were pretty low. Things just didn't add up for the organization and in 2019 they
