MiLB: The Walk-Off Sports Report Southern League Playoff Watch (August 25th, 2018)

The second to final Saturday Night of the 2018 regular season featured some high scoring games. The Chattanooga Lookouts and Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp kept it calm until the eighth inning while Mississippi came close to shutting out the Biloxi Shuckers.

Two more teams are now closer to elimination the night after the Chattanooga Lookouts became the second team to be eliminated from winning the second half. As we approach the week, things could get a little heated and two teams may be eliminated before the final week of the regular season even begins.

North Division Playoff Picture

Tennessee dropped their second straight game to the Montgomery Biscuits landing them with their backs against the wall. The Smokies cannot afford to lose any more games the remainder of the year but more importantly, they have to keep Montgomery from winning anymore if they'd like to have a chance to make the playoffs IF Jackson sweeps the halves.

Jackson pulled ahead of Birmingham earning the victory 7-3 while Chattanooga dropped the second game of their series Saturday Night late after taking the lead late.

Montgomery's magic number is now 5.

  3. Birmingham Barons - 6 GB - 3
  4. Tennessee Smokies - 7 GB - 1

South Division Playoff Picture

Much like Pensacola last weekend, Biloxi could not have picked a worse time to have a losing streak brewing. Though it doesn't really matter if Biloxi wins the half or not, in terms of making the playoffs, it still matters in the form of how many games Biloxi will get to play at home. Mississippi moved closer and closer to making the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Speaking of Pensacola, they snapped their six-game losing streak on Saturday Night by defeating the Mobile BayBears pushing the BayBears closer and closer to elimination from winning the second-half championship.

IF Biloxi takes the second half championship, Mobile would still be eligible to make the playoffs via the Wild Card. If a team sweeps both halves of the season, then the team with the second best overall record will play the team who swept both halves. From this Watch forward, we will update the Wild Card Standings.

Biloxi's magic number remains at 8.

South Division Standings - Games Behind - Elimination Numbers

  5. Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp - 10.0 - ELIMINATED

Supercross: Chad Reed Tallies First Podium Finish Since 2017

It wasn't a victory for Chad Reed in Detroit but it was a podium finish for the driver from Kurri Kurri, Australia. His first podium since Glendale in 2017 and the 132nd career podium finish. The finish is just another page in the story for Reed and 2019 has been one hell of a story so far. Reed has already earned more top 10 finishes this season then he did last season. The first top-five finish Reed earned this year already was more than he netted in 2018. Before San Diego, Reed had not finished inside the top five since Toronto in 2017. Will Christien denoted to Reed during the post-race interview that he had not been a fan of the new "Triple Crown" format but will take a third place finish. "Honestly just starts and finally riding to your ability," Reed told NBCSN. "It's been a long time. For the guy who has stood up here more than anyone in the sport, you know I take it on personally as just feeling less about myself for not getting up here and

MiLB: Mobile BayBears Look for Walk-Off in Final Season in Mobile

On Thursday (April 4th), the Mobile BayBears kick off their final season in Mobile, Alabama. The team will relocate to Madison, Alabama after this season and the BayBears are looking to finish in walk-off style. The BayBears have an opportunity in 2019 to tie the Montgomery Biscuits with four Southern League titles. The organization is currently fourth on the all-time SLCS victories. One last season at Hank Aaron Stadium, is this the year they walk-off with their fifth Southern League championship? In 2018, the Mobile BayBears were hiding in the bushes during the 2018 Walk-Off Sports Report Southern League Playoff Watch but the organization was eliminated from playoff contention rather early in the campaign. The organization finished 66-70, fourth in the South Division. The BayBears were second in runs scored per game and runs batted in during the 2018 season but the rest of the batting statistics were pretty low. Things just didn't add up for the organization and in 2019 they
