The Los Angeles Angels will continue to be the Major League affiliate of the Mobile BayBears through the 2022 season. The two have signed a four-year Player Development Contract (PDC) that will remain in effect when the BayBears move to Madison, Alabama following the 2019 season.
"We look forward to continuing our affiliation with the Los Angeles Angels over the next four years, with the final season at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile and our future home in North Alabama," said Ralph Nelson, the Managing Partner & CEO of BallCorps. "The Angels ownership, front office, coaches, medical staff, and players are all quality individuals who have made this partnership successful over the past two years. We have seen continued success from the Angels organization, which will bring a high quality of baseball to North Alabama beginning in 2020."
The agreement between the Los Angeles Angels began in 2017 the Mobile BayBears have a 126-137 record. The BayBears are currently fourth in South Division standings, 7.5 games behind division leader Biloxi.
The BayBears were affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2007 till 2016. The BayBears have been affiliated with the San Diego Padres (1997-2006), Seattle Mariners (1995-1996), and Minnesota Twins (1993-1994). The organization has won the Southern League Championship four times with the most recent coming in 2012 when the team defeated the Jackson Generals.
Since 1997 Mobile has been home to the BayBears but as it was previously announced the team will be moved to Madison, Alabama in 2020. The new stadium is slated to be just down I-565 less than 20 minutes from Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Alabama where the Huntsville Stars formerly played.
"We are very excited to continue our relationship with the BayBears franchise, as well as with the fans all throughout the state of Alabama," said Angels General Manager Billy Eppler. "We would like to thank Ralph Nelson, Roger Wexelberg, and their staff for their efforts throughout this process. The community and front office in Mobile have been great assets for our organization's player development process over the last two years, and we look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come in the great community of North Alabama."
Fans still have time to vote for the name of the New North Alabama baseball team. Voting ends on Labor Day with the options being the Comet Jockeys, Moon Possums, Space Chimps, ThunderSharks, and Trash Pandas. Click here to vote. (Koelle,2018)
