MiLB: Jumbo Shrimp and City of Jacksonville Sign Lease Extension Through at least 2033

Officials from the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp announced on Wednesday that the team and city of Jacksonville have signed a lease extension to remain at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonvile through 2033. The Jacksonville City Council approved a new lease extension for the Miami Marlins Double-A affiliate.

The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville broke ground in 2001 and was opened at the beginning of the 2003 season. Since that 2003 season, the Southern League playoffs have been hosted in Jacksonville in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2014, and 2017. It has been home of the Southern League Champion Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp/Suns in 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2014. They will continue to play at the stadium through at least the 2033 season.

“Since assuming control of the team in 2015 it has been one of our top priorities to work on a lease extension that confirms our commitment to Jacksonville,” said Jumbo Shrimp Owner Ken Babby in the team release. “Our fans have shown incredible support and loyalty making the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville a can’t-miss destination for Affordable, Family, Fun and with this lease extension we are stating firmly that we are committed to this community for a long, long time.  Thank you to Mayor Curry, Chief Administrative Officer Sam Mousa, Chief of Staff Brian Hughes, City Council, and the City of Jacksonville for working with us in this process.”

The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville had an attendence number of 317,335 in 2018 per MiLB. The stadium had the second best overall attendence in the Southern League, second to the Birmingham Barons. Along with that statistic, Jacksonville had the second best average attendance of the Southern League in 2018. (Koelle,2018)
