MiLB: The Walk-Off Sports Report Southern League Playoff Watch (September 1st, 2018)

As the Southern League approaches the end of the regular season, every team in the league is chasing everything they can get. Montgomery is looking to gain as much momentum as they can before Wednesday but wasn't able to as the Biscuits/BayBears game was postponed to Sunday.

With a victory against Tennessee, The Pensacola Blue Wahoos will play the Biloxi Shuckers starting on Wednesday. It's their second straight trip to the playoffs.

North Division Playoff Picture

While the division-leading Montgomery Biscuits didn't play on Saturday night, the rest of the league had an opportunity to make up some lost ground. The only team that did so though was the Jackson Generals, who defeated the Chattanooga Lookouts. 

Birmingham lost to Biloxi and Tennessee lost to Pensacola basically meaning no teams were able to make up ground, but at this point, it doesn't matter as Montgomery already clinched the second half title.

  3. Birmingham Barons  - 8.5 GB - ELIMINATED
  4. Tennessee Smokies -  9.5 GB - ELIMINATED
  5. Chattanooga Lookouts -  11.5 GB - ELIMINATED

North Division Wild Card Standings (IF Jackson Wins Second Half)

  1. Montgomery Biscuits: (77 - 60)
  2. Tennessee Smokies: (66 - 70)
  3. Chattanooga Lookouts (64-71)
  4. Birmingham Barons: (64 - 72)

South Division Playoff Picture

The South Division posted a strong showing Saturday night with Biloxi and Pensacola picking up the victory. Mississippi and Jacksonville split their doubleheader and take Sunday off. 

The Biloxi Shuckers are one game away from sweeping the halves of the season which, as noted above, will send the Pensacola Blue Wahoos to the SLSDCS as they have the lead in the Wild Card Standings.

College Football: Chattanooga Remains Undefeated with Victory Against Samford

The Chattanooga Mocs are off to a hot start following their victory against the Samford Bulldogs on Saturday Night. The Mocs kept the Samford offense from breaking through to the end zone during the first quarter and scored often throughout the remainder of the game earn a 4-0 record. Bryce Nunnelly started off the scoring for the Mocs with a 55-yard pass from Nick Tiano who would break through and put the Mocs on the board 6-0. A successful P.A.T put the Mocs up 7-0 early. The Mocs would tack on two more touchdowns (and extra points) before the Samford Bulldogs were able to tack on their first points of the night. Samford's DeMarcus Ware pushed through the defense to give Samford their first touchdown of the evening but they would still trail the Mocs 17-10 heading into halftime. It's been really exciting to see what's going down in the Southern League but sadly, that's about to come to an end but Football is about to start kicking off its coverage on here so stay tuned. MiLB: Birmingham Barons Lead Attendance Numbers in First Half

Per the Southern League attendance numbers, the Birmingham Barons had the highest attendance of the Southern League first half. The Barons had an attendance total of 200,196 during the first half of the season while the South Division Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp came in second with 165,895. The Barons finished the first half in fifth in the North Division while Jacksonville finished fourth in the South Division. The Mobile BayBears, who will be relocating to Madison, Alabama at the end of the season had the lowest attendance in the Southern League. Mobile had an attendance total of 35,102 averaging out to 1,300. The Jackson Generals, who are the defending Southern League Champions, held the second worst attendance at 55,713 (1,741 average). The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (148,060), Tennessee Smokies (118,713), and the North Division First Half Champion Montgomery Biscuits (116,902) rounded out the top five attendance totals in the first half.
