MiLB: New Orleans Could Be Next City to a Have Southern League Team by 2021

The new North Alabama baseball team may not be the only addition to the Southern League in the next few years. According to a report from the WWLTV CBS affiliate in New Orleans, Louisiana, a group of New Orleans investors hope to have a AA Minor League team in the Southern League by 2021. This report comes after another report that the New Orleans Baby Cakes will move to Witchita, Kansas when the lease at The Shrine On Airline in Metairie, Louisiana comes to an end in 2021.

The Mobile BayBears will be relocating to Madison, Alabama following the 2019 season. Recent moves have included the Huntsville Stars move to Biloxi, Mississippi and the Carolina Mudcats move to Pensacola, Blue Wahoos (Carolina was moved down to A-Advanced).

Currently in the Southern League is the Chattanooga Lookouts, Tennessee Smokies, Jackson Generals, Birmingham Barons, and Montgomery Biscuits highlighting the North Division while the Biloxi Shuckers, Mississippi Braves, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, and Pensacola Blue Wahoos represent the South Division. The new North Alabama team will be in the North Division which could mean Montgomery returns to the South Division.

Per the Southern League's website, Mobile currently holds the worst attendance numbers of the Southern League with 69,504 in 2018. The ninth worst attendance in the Southern League came in Jackson, Tennessee with 110,798.

In 2018 the New Orleans Baby Cakes finished third in the Pacific Coast League American Southern Division with a 69-70 record. In 2018 New Orleans also had the worst attendance of the Pacific Coast League with 252,614 meaning roughly 3,827 was the average attendance. In 2017, New Orleans held the 14th attendance with 349,883. Following the 2016 season, the New Orleans Zephyrs were renamed the Baby Cakes to bring more attention to the team. (Koelle,2018)
